Be a part of this family

{tab SONSHIP|align_justify}

Every sinner is a child of the devil in the sense that he wields dominion over them and they yield themselves to him. "Ye are of your father the devil... "(John 8:44). While we are creatures of God, we are not born into God's family by the natural birth.

The product of the natural birth is a natural man! "for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23).

But the good news is that God wants you to be His child. The devil is just a usurper. God really owns us. That is why at salvation, He redeems us (buys us back from the one we yielded the control of our lives to - the devil).

When you receive Jesus into your life, you become a son/daughter (child) of God. "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name" (John 1:12). It is this spiritual birth that makes us children of God. When you have this new birth experience, you are born into the family of God. We say that you are born again. It is important to note that if you are a sinner, you need to be born again and become a child of God.

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23)

If you have never received Christ as your Saviour, I encourage you to do that now.

ABC of becoming a child of God

  • ACKNOWLEDGE that you are a sinner, in need of a Saviour. This brings genuine repentance. Acknowledge that only Jesus can save you. (Acts 4:12).
  • BELIEVE, with your heart, in His atoning work of the cross for you. Believe that God raised Jesus from the dead for you.
  • CONFESS with your mouth the Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 10:9-10).

It is that simple! We didn't make it simple, God did. After this, what next? Well, it's time for DISCIPLESHIP

Scripture: I John 3:1-3

"It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master..." (Matthew 10:25).

True discipleship is in becoming more like Jesus. With true discipleship, we see ourselves moving from new-born babes in Christ into spiritual manhood. The interesting part is that we keep on growing until we see Jesus face-to-face.

A disciple of Jesus Christ always seeks to pattern his life after the life and teachings of the Lord.

  • Forsaking all, I follow Him. "So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple" (Luke 14:33).
  • Increased obedience to the Lord. "And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them.." (Matthew 21:6).
  • The hands of Jesus extended."And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude."(Matthew 15:36).
  • Access to secrets with the Lord. "Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ." (Matthew 16:20). See also Matthew 24:3.

But it doesn't just happen automatically. It is the result of consistent effort towards tapping into spiritual resources that God has made available for our growth.

Fellowship-loving believers. Fellowship regularly and consistently with the Lord - The secret of becoming more like the Lord is in spending time in His presence. The more time you spend with the Lord, the more like Him you would become. In doing this,

Pray everyday. Pray regularly. Pray always.

Read your bible everyday and live it out.  "Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed" (John 8:31).

Read other godly books that can help you know the Lord more.

Fellowship with believers of likemind. "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together..." Hebrews 10:25. As you do this, you learn from other older disciples from the things the Lord has thought them.

Fruit-bearing believers. "Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples." (John 15:8). True disciples bear the fruit of righteousness as they do also the fruit of witnessing. They produce other disciples.

Love-emitting believers. "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another." (John 13:35). True disciples love anyone that Jesus loves. They live like Jesus lived while on earth. They are the "bible" some men will ever read.
Always remember that you represent Christ. You are a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Stewardship means to manage someone else’s property.

As you grow in the Lord, you will understand that everything you have belong to Him. He is the owner of everything and you and I are simply caretakers.

It includes the faithful use of all our resources - time, money, body, talents, gifts etc. It entails always avoiding wastages and putting our resources to best use for the profit of God and of His kingdom.

As part of your stewardship, ensure that you give to God regularly through the church. This includes your tithe and other offerings as God may put in your heart.

It also means that you should use your talents and gifts to serve the body of Christ. This may include writing, singing, praying, teaching, counselling, ushering etc.
